Chanel Holiday 2011 Nail Colour 587 Rouge Carat Swatch Review and Comparison to Dior 651 Merveille

This holiday we are loving red nail colors, just a couple weeks ago I featured a golden red polish of Dior Merveille from The Or Vernis collection. Today I’ll be showcasing another red polish from Les Scintillances de Chanel collection. It’s 587 Rouge Carat, a haute fiery red that is perfect for the holiday season. You might ask, what’s a fiery red? See the quick swatch before we proceed.

As you might notice, the color inside the bottle depicts a bold iridescent shimmering red. When you look straight down it is so strong and brilliant, just like a bottle of fire.

The beauty is far more complex than a shimmering red. Under a different angle, the shimmers turn into a hot neon pink with hints of cool blue.

The first swatch shot was taken with natural indoor lighting giving the nails a glazed ruby red look with specks of shimmers that are not very noticeable. The polish itself is absolutely fantastic. It has a bit thicker consistency than a usual Chanel polish but it applies beautifully smooth and dries into a high shine glossy finish. Pigmentation is also superb. I was able to do just one coat to get that fully opaque coverage. There were no brush marks or bare spots left behind.

I also took two shots with different angles while I had some sunlight. See how the shimmers look red in the first photo and they look more pink in the second.

We can’t end today’s review without showing you a comparison of the 2 red polishes. I know you’ve been curious to see how Chanel’s Rouge Carat compares to Dior’s Merveille? Let me show you a bottle of Merveille first. As you can see, it is a very bright red infused with ultra fine gold shimmers. And the color is glowing.

Swatched on the nails with left two fingers being Dior Merveille and right two fingers being Chanel Rouge Carat. Merveille apparently looks a lot lighter and brighter than Rouge Carat, but Rouge Carat seems to have more depth than Merveille.

Here is a close up with two colors standing side by side. Rouge Carat (left) is a cooler toned garnet/ruby red while Merveille (right) is totally golden.

One last comparison of the two polishes in a different angle. At this angle we clearly see Rouge Carat’s fuchsia pink side, while Merveille’s golden shimmer makes it looking much warmer.

Chanel Rouge Carat is a breathtaking festive red color. It is very striking and passionate. The shimmers change colors from ruby red to fuchsia pink, making it complex yet a true gem. It’s definitely a memorable red in my collection of polish.

In terms of comparison to Dior Merveille, I’m not here to judge which one is better. Honestly I love both of them and they’re two totally different reds. One is a bright golden red and the other is a rich fiery red. Both applied beautifully on the nails and lasted a week with only minor tip wear. (Yes I have both colors on my hands for a week.) It’s just a personal preference.

You have the nicest color comparison pictures. After looking at both nails, I see that Dior is more brighter than Chanel which is actually not bad. I can wear both shades feeling they are different in color now.

Yep both colors are slightly different and gives the user a sense of which one is lighter or darker.

Nice comparison between the two red polishes. I’m loving Rouge Carat a lot, even though Merveille is really nice too. I’m more of a shimmer girl.
