DIY Nail Decoration with ibd Gel

Tired of the clear and white gels from the ibd Introductory Kit, I wanted to add some twists to it and make my own nail decorations. I’ve done some research and it seems acrylic liquid and powder technique is more superior than the regular gel. Because with gel it’s more liquid-y so it’s not as easy to mold it into shape. But there’s still something that can be made by gel, such as the sticker type.

I haven’t got a chance to get more color gels yet but I’ve seen people mixing pigments with clear gel to achieve different colors. This is what I’m doing today.

These gold pigments are Chanel Highlighting Powder from Holiday 2008. I’ve heard that pigments have different grades. If something is good for cosmetic purpose, it should be OK for nails. Don’t quote me on this though.

So I just use the end of a tooth pick to mix the pigments with clear gel then use the gel brush to smooth it out on a piece of foil.

I’m also testing a thin layer and a thick layer to see which one works better.

Bake it for roughly 4 to 5 minutes just to make sure it cures completely.

I got these craft punches at Michael’s. I’ve been searching for the perfect punches forever but nothing looked decent yet. We don’t have great stuff like the Japanese girls do. I’ve seen punches with cute designs on the magazines.

So I made some hearts, stars and flowers. It came out so ugly. The punches are definitely not for this. But I do find out that thicker sheets work better than the thin ones.

Anyone know where I can find good quality punches?

Wow this is crazy how you’re making it yourself! Do you just stick them onto your nails after?

I like your creativity! How come they did not come out as you wanted? Was the gel still too flexible to be punched clearly? Really too bad, because I have tons of lovely punchers… X-mas angels and so on. There is a difference in how the small punches work, and the bigger ones where you can actually change the punchers, maybe that would help. Unfortunately no idea were you could find it, Michael’s and so on are the only places I know in the US, and I live in the Netherlands! I usually find the best stuff in art/DIY fairs.
