Dolce & Gabbana Ruby Collection for Holiday 2011

The Fashion Inspiration

If there is one thing that symbolizes the fiery Sicilian passion that lies at the very heart of everything Dolce&Gabbana create, it is the ruby. This blood red stone is a recurring theme in the Designers’ collections, its peerless beauty utilized three dimensionally, in crystal form, for embellishment and as a vivid colour, as powerful and emphatic as any monogram.

This rare jewel is as much a Dolce&Gabbana tradition as gold and leopard print. But the ruby possesses deep emotional significance too: the ruby precious stone is a personal treasure, a pigeon’s blood ruby set in a gold ring, owned and worn by Stefano Gabbana. “The ruby is my favorite precious stone,” says Stefano, “It represents fire and passion, two things that characterize me quite well, and it’s my birthstone too.

The ruby red ring evokes many memories of the Designers’ childhoods: the Italian racing red of the 1960s Alfa Romeo Spider, the car driven by Dustin Hoffman in the film The Graduate. “The nostalgia of that glamorous, liberated era is always inspiring,” says Domenico Dolce. “A casually elegant man driving a sensual, carefree woman in that red sports car. The wind is playing with her hair, she’s wearing vermillion lipstick: that image for me is so modern and powerful,” he says.

The Beauty Inspiration

The irrevocable link between Dolce&Gabbana’s unique take on fashion, luxury and beauty has inspired a special make-up edition for Holiday 2011, Ruby Collection. This perfect edit of key make-up colours for lips, eyes and cheeks, was chosen and designed by Domenico Dolce and Stefano Gabbana in collaboration with make-up artist Pat McGrath who applied her painterly skills to translate the artistic concept into make-up reality.

A treasure-seeker’s dream, cool, silky golden compacts are each embossed with a precious ruby-red jewel, while lipstick cases are studded on the end with a vivid red stone, like some kind of modernist signet. Desirable, wantable, the special edition of five Classic Cream Lipsticks, one Blush and one Eyeshadow Quad are ultimately collectable. “Don’t you just love the jeweled compacts and lipsticks?” says Pat McGrath. “But when you open them up, you get these wonderfully classic and chic colours to play with. I love that kind of duality– it’s so Dolce&Gabbana.

Each of the five Classic Cream Lipsticks (with such evocative names as Devil and Scarlett…) delivers a unique colour story using the ruby as inspiration and range from deep, pulsating carmine to bright, incandescent cerise.

The Eyeshadow Quad offers a collection of ultimate neutrals – from shimmering white to highlight, to carbon black to create depth and drama. In between, for shading and shaping, perfect taupe and loam brown.

To harmonize the eyes and lips, The Blush in Peach, adds a flattering, soft suede flush to the skin.
