Guerlain Rouge Automatique Lipstick 162 Bloom of Rose Swatch and Review

Spring 2011 is like a lipstick lover’s heaven. Many brands launched either revamped lipsticks or new line, such as Dior Addict Lipsticks (reviewed in earlier posts), Chanel Rouge Coco Shine, etc. Today I want to share with you another collection from Guerlain. It’s called Rouge Automatique Lipstick.

This collection was inspired by the original Guerlain Automatique Lipstick back in 1936, when craftsmanship and hand finishes weren’t as great as now. But the idea is to use one hand to push reveal the lipstick. Of course today’s Automatique collection has better formulation and better design. It also comes in a variety of 25 shades that can be categorized into 4 shade families, beige, red, pink and orange. Today’s color 162 Bloom of Rose belongs to the pink category.

The outside packaging looks similar but a lot smaller than the Guerlain Rouge G Jewel Lipstick Compact.

It has the same weight as the Rouge G of 3.5g.

Rouge Automatique 162 Bloom of Rose

Does it look like an automatic cigaret case to you? Whether or not, the packaging design has a bit man-ish element in it which is very refreshing and unique. Even the shape is square rather than the commonly seen round cylinder.

And it is super light, the whole thing is about the same weight as the Rouge G lipstick itself without the mirror part.

The design is also very simple. There’s only a slider and a button on the side.

On the bottom it has the color and the number for easy recognition, though there’s no room for the color name.

162 Bloom of Rose is a rosy pink with red tone. It has the same violet scent as most Guerlain products.

The tip looks pretty much the same if not exactly the same as Rouge G. I wouldn’t be surprised because they do have the same weight.

On top of the tip it also has a tiny flat edge that’s only seen in Guerlain lipsticks. I still remembered when I got my first Guerlain lipstick, I thought it was a defect. So silly!

This is how it looks like in the sun. I like the color vein on it, so pretty and interesting.

Since the innovative packaging is the main selling point of the collection, let’s take a closer look at the mechanism. This first picture shows how it’s closed. Note the slider button is on the top and there’s a square door that covers the lipstick.

Now with the button sliding down, the square door starts to retract into the package.

Take another look from the front.

And with the arc orbit (white arrow pointed) and the slanted lipstick tip, it made it safe for the door not touching the lipstick.

See it again from top view.

Side view. There’s a small gap between the lipstick and the square door.

Even though it looks quite close, there’s just no way the lipstick will get smashed by the door. Under normal condition, that is.

Botton down some more, the lipstick reveals.

And the square door is completely down in the package.

It’s a fun and safe run!

I just love the super smart design. How about you?

Let me show you some detail pictures before the swatch. First one is the square door with “Guerlain” branding.

Another detail picture of the sliding button with “G” for Guerlain.

Again “Guerlain” in cursive appears on the bottom of the lipstick.

Finally let me show you the swatch. Just like the name, Bloom of Rose looks like a vibrant rosy pink which I consider a lovely Spring/Summer shade. It has really fine shimmers that looks soft and glow-y.

Not quite as pigmented as Rouge G, Rouge Automatique has high medium coverage. It glides on effortless and feels light weight.

The fine shimmers not only give shine to the lips, they also add a frosty finish. I wish I could show you a picture of how it looks in the sun but it’s been cloudy. It leaves me no choice by using flash though the color is a bit off. Just ignore it and see how shiny and glossy it is. While it looks quite juicy, it doesn’t feel a tiny bit of stickiness. At the same time, it’s not very moisturizing either.

– The PACKAGING! I love how simple and easy it is with single hand operation. It is light weight but doesn’t look cheap.
– The price significantly drops almost 25% compared to the Rouge G Lipsticks.
– The texture is very smooth and it is light weight on the lips without waxy feeling.
– The crystal fine shimmers give the lips a subtle frosty finish that’s soft and luminous.
– It is very long lasting. I tried drinking and eating ramen with it, even the surface shine wore off, the color sticked to the lips pretty well. I get over 5 hours wear which is really nice.
– 25 shades are all regular items so there’s no worry of being sold out.

– It’d be nice if the slider button could be locked in place, that way it’ll avoid opening the lipstick by accident.
– The lipstick could break if it’s out all the way. So you may want to leave it out as short as possible.
– My main complaint about the Rouge Automatique 162 Bloom of Rose is that it’s not as moisturizing. My lips start to feel dry after a short period of time. It definitely can’t compare to the Rouge G. I hope it’s only the case with this shade.
– $35 price tag is too expensive considering the quality does not match the price. I would rather pay more for Rouge G or get something similar with less money.

After trying this specific shade, 162 Bloom of Rose, I kind of having mixed feeling so I am still debating on this new collection. Needless to say, I’m a fan of the neat packaging. The color selection is great, the texture is nice and the staying power is awesome. But its dry feeling really doesn’t live up to the brand name. I was expecting something better from Guerlain for $35 price tag. But I’m not completely down yet, I’m going to try another shade and see if it’s better. Review’s coming soon.

Can’t wait to finally get my hands on them, even though Guerlain’s a French brand, they haven’t been released here yet (just like the Coco Shine lipsticks, we had them one month before they landed in the USA). Gosh, so many colours on my wish list, but the price tag is so… shocking

the package is so neatly designed =]
but i agree, a lock would be safe, in case the slider slides open when it’s in the purse…

I agree that the square shape is kind of manish but it’s very cool and sleek. The color looks beautiful on you.
