In an exceptional collaboration, the celebrated film director Wong Kar Wai has created an exclusive short film for shu uemura that showcases his unique vision of femininity, all captured in his dreamily nostalgic and hip style. Wong’s lush visual poem “Mask” depicts a dramatic story expressed with “rouge et bleu”- the colors red and blue.

Inspired by a poem written by Charles Bukowski “Burning in Water, Drowning in Flame*” Wong’s emotional masterpiece is a portrait of the liberating passion deep within our hearts, which reinvents ourselves with sparks of red passion that slowly burn…until they overflow. Gently they enwrap the entire body…burning like ice, drowning in fire. A fantasia rich with emotions, “Mask” is a dance between the extreme heat of passion and a sea of calm, climaxing in a glittering shower of healing beauty. Every face is a celebration of life and nothing can stop the flow of your passion this holiday season.

Wong is currently working on his next film, titled “The Grandmasters”

Casting for “Mask”

The main actress of “Mask” directed by Wong Kar Wai is Sandrinne Pinna, a rising star in the Taiwan film scene. shu uemura’s international artistic director Kakuyasu Uchiide proposed a passionate and cool make-up inspired by glittering gold in red and blue for the nights of the holiday season.

Sandrinne Pinna Profile

Hailed as the rising star of the new Taiwanese cinema, Sandrinne Pinna has emerged as one of Asia’s most unforgettable faces. She began her career at the age of 10 in TV commercials followed by numerous TV series and films like “Poor Prince” and “Police et Vous”. She received the Best Actress award at both the 11th Taipei Film Festival and the 53rd Asian Pacific Film Festival.

Make-up Inspiration: Kakuyasu Uchiide
shu uemura International Artistic Director

When I imagined Sandrinne’s make-up, I instantly envisioned strong passion such as “love”. I wanted to evoke the source of deep emotions, and express love a little bolder than usual. So I used blue eye make-up with silver glitter to express the energy of life and passionate rouge for her lips, and I put “LOVE” on Sandrinne’s lips to symbolize hidden passion and love.

I love the lipsticks, they have a picture and it’s a clear case as well. I remember the collaboration before with Chisato and stuff. They have all these cool looking designs.
